The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
