Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
